My Journey: From Childhood Curiosity to IT Leadership
My fascination with technology began early, playing games on a Commodore 64 and Coleco Adam. This childhood curiosity, combined with a love for drawing that led me to excel in mechanical and architectural drafting, set the stage for a career dedicated to building and problem-solving. While college felt out of reach financially, the Navy offered a path forward, and despite my fear of water, I enlisted, ready for a new challenge.
From Seabee to IT Specialist: Building Foundations
My time as a Navy Seabee, the elite construction force, gave me invaluable hands-on experience in the construction industry. It was here that I discovered my knack for IT. I quickly learned the ropes of desktops, servers, and networks, even managing a 100-user network in Adak, AK, after just a few months of training. This experience taught me independence, adaptability, and the importance of reliable systems.
After leaving the Navy, I continued my IT career at a civil engineering firm. I managed a mixed Novell/Microsoft server network and even implemented a RedHat Linux Proxy server, developing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that was still in use a decade later. This early success underscored my ability to create sustainable and effective IT solutions.
Navigating the IT Landscape: Expertise and Innovation
My career progressed through various companies like GT Computers, Traficon USA, and R-Tech Consulting, where I consistently honed my skills and embraced new technologies. I became adept at troubleshooting complex issues and implementing innovative solutions, such as VMware server virtualization to reduce physical server needs.
A standout achievement while managing multiple clients with R-Tech Consulting was at JMC Business Systems, where I spearheaded a major office relocation, ensuring seamless connectivity and preventing any data loss. This demonstrated my ability to manage complex projects with meticulous planning and execution. While employed at GT Computers as an IT Consultant and Sales Manager, I not only drove revenue growth but also provided critical support to diverse clients, from large childcare chains to individual home users. I designed and implemented robust network infrastructures, upgraded outdated systems, and consistently delivered exceptional support. My experience working with Traficon USA as an IT Support Specialist and Field Technician further broadened my expertise, providing on-site technical support for traffic video detection equipment across North America, showcasing my dedication to 24/7 system operation and client satisfaction.
Embracing Challenges and Growth: Resilience and Leadership
My journey has had its share of challenges, including company closures and personal difficulties. However, each obstacle became an opportunity for growth. When JMC Business Systems closed, I persevered and launched my own consulting company, Forward Thinking Guys, a testament to my entrepreneurial spirit and problem-solving drive.
As a Senior Systems Engineer at JMC Business Systems, I navigated a complex corporate environment, further honing my interpersonal skills and leadership abilities. In this role, I successfully led office migrations, implemented cost-saving solutions like Microsoft Windows Terminal Server, and even recovered critical data from failing servers with zero data loss. My responsibilities also included supervising and mentoring IT staff, managing budgets, and staying ahead of emerging technologies.
Following this, as an Information Technology Specialist at Forward Thinking Guys, I focused on diverse technical implementations and client support, including home theater installations and managing virtual cloud systems for numerous customers. My experience then continued as a Senior Systems Technician / Associate Data Center Engineer at GEICO, further solidifying my expertise in data center management, system upgrades, and audit compliance. I was instrumental in improving backup recovery rates and ensuring the reliability of critical systems.
Returning Stronger: Dedication and Adaptability
A difficult divorce prompted a career sabbatical to prioritize my family. This period, while challenging, allowed me to develop resilience, empathy, and enhanced communication skills as I guided my children through a significant emotional transition. This experience reinforced my belief in strong foundations, open communication, and problem-solving under pressure.
Re-entering the workforce, I adapted to new challenges, including remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. My passion for technology led me to the EV industry with Electrify America. As a NOC Technician and later a NOC Training Lead, I quickly learned complex systems, developed and delivered comprehensive training programs, and became the main point of contact for critical asset management initiatives. I consistently achieved high customer satisfaction ratings by providing timely support and troubleshooting complex issues for both customers and field technicians. My ability to create clear instructional handbooks and streamline processes ensured high retention rates for new hires and efficient operations.
